“REAL food is all you need, screw supplements, they’re dangerous!” Believe it or not, that’s still how a lot of people think today. You might think that too. But let’s take a second to look at this from a rational and scientifically backed point of view. Let’s take vitamin D for example.
You need about 2,000 IU of vitamin D per day, and one of the highest food sources of vitamin D is herring fish which has 460 IU’s per oz. You’d need 5 oz. of that DAILY to get your total amount. Are you down to eat 5 oz. of herring per day? Oh, and btw, that’s the lowest effective dosage and from a health and function perspective. If you’re looking for optimizing the benefits you can get from Vit D then you’d be looking at the range of 4000-5000 IU/day! So make it 10-12oz of herring in that case!
Oh let’s say, for arguments sake, that you are ready to eat that much. Now you’re at risk for mercury poisoning. So if you’re against supplements, you’re left with the choice of mercury poisoning, or vitamin D deficiency…pick your poison.
Enter supplements. Take a few tiny vitamin D softgels at the right dosage and you’re covered for the week.
But now comes another issue…

A lot of people are misinformed of the dangers of supplements. And this shouldn’t always be the case. Knowledge is power and when it comes to supplements, this holds especially true. And not only when it comes to your family either.

They see you getting big and it MUST be the supplements you’re taking. Again, knowledge is power. And surely you know your stuff when it comes to supplements right? They’re all the rage and you may take them religiously every day to help guarantee that you get the most gains possible. But then comes the issue of…

I used to be guilty of this. Supplements are great, but if you’re treating them like food, then you may want to rethink that. Because at the end of the day, do you know if the supplement that you’re taking is dangerous? The only way you can start to really understand supplements is with the proper knowledge.
The world of supplements is HUGE with so many different kinds with so many different purposes. Some may be VERY dangerous while others, completely safe. With so much information out there telling you different things, it’s easy to be both obsessed with taking supps, or even petrified of taking even a multi-vitamin.
The last thing I’d like to add is that some supplements are like this:
Wolf in sheep’s clothing. Every day many people take supplements that are deemed safe, when actually, they may be causing SERIOUS damage due to unethical practices by some supplement companies.
